There was a real buzz around Standish Care Village this month, because our latest Together in the Village get-together came with a sports theme. Medals, smoothies, friendly rivalry and plenty of laughter filled the afternoon, and we honestly couldn't have asked for a better day.

For anyone new to it, Together in the Village brings residents from all of our Millennium Care homes to Standish Care Village for a shared activity each month. It gives everyone the chance to meet, swap stories, make new friends and feel part of one big community. Every edition has its own personality.

Meet Freddy, the man behind the medals

The day was hosted by Freddy, our fitness instructor here at Standish Care Village. Freddy works with residents week in, week out, keeping them fit, active and moving in ways that suit each resident. What makes his sessions so popular isn't just the exercise itself. It's the sense of accomplishment he gives people. Residents leave his sessions standing a little taller, and that confidence carries into everything else they do around the Village.

For Sports Day, Freddy designed a series of Standish Care Village challenges that got everyone involved, whatever their ability.

And when Freddy sets a challenge, our residents rise to it!

An afternoon of champions

The line-up had something for everyone. Residents tested their reflexes on the light-up reaction game, showed off their strength with a deadlift, and threw some impressive punches in a boxing session. 

The basketball hoop challenge sparked plenty of friendly competition, the hurdles brought out everyone's inner athlete, and the catching exercise rounded things off with quick hands and quicker laughs.

The cheering carried right across Standish Care Village. Residents clapped each other on, staff joined in the encouragement, and every single competitor crossed the finish line to a round of applause.

Medals, smoothies and smiles all round

Every resident earned a medal, and they wore them with pride. The smiles as Freddy presented each one said it all. Afterwards, our champions refuelled the healthy way, with fresh fruit, smoothies and nutritious snacks to celebrate a job well done. Gold medal performances deserve gold medal treats, after all.

Days like this capture exactly what Standish Care Village stands for. It's a place where residents from all across the Group come together as one community, try new things and cheer each other on. Sports Day showed that age is no barrier to competition, achievement or having a brilliant time.
