Age is just a number

3 minute read

A 101-year-old resident at Lakeside Care Home is proving that age is just a number when it comes to volunteering after spending some time at a local food bank.

Jane Green will celebrate her 102nd birthday in July and has started the year off right by supporting Bryn Community Shop. What started as a visit to donate a food parcel ended up in a stint behind the tills.

Bryn Community Shop, based in Ashton-in-Makerfield, is part of the Fare Share network. Open five days a week and supports the local community with fresh and affordable food.

Aided by the home’s Activity Coordinator, she visited the Community Shop for the first time this month.

“We’re a Foodbank, supporting people who are struggling with free food parcels, and we also run a Food Pantry. Food is the one thing I have a connection to, so we can help people.

“Jane was helping to serve people, and it seemed like she really enjoyed it. It’s really lovely to have those connections in the community. We’re more than just food here, we’re a centre point, it’s nice working with everyone in the community and putting a smile on people’s faces.

“Thank you very much to Lakeside for letting us meet Jane, she’s got an open invitation to come down whenever she wants!”

Stephen Jones, Founder of the Community Shop

“It was wonderful, very interesting and great to help out providing change! I didn’t know there were shops like this. It’s great for the community and good for the environment. We don’t like waste! I enjoyed my time there and will definitely be back again.”
