Wigan in Top 5 Cities for Care Assistants

3 minute read

A recent study from Caredemy has put Wigan in the top five best UK cities for Care Assistants, and we’re not shocked!

Caredemy is an online learning platform and training provider focused on caregivers and the care industry.

Caredemy conducted the study to understand and highlight where care assistants in the UK can achieve the best balance between earnings, job opportunities, and living costs, essentially identifying which cities offer the greatest financial stability and quality of life for caregivers. It evaluates factors such as average salaries, job openings, rental costs, and disposable income to guide both policy discussions and individual career decisions.

Ranked fifth out of 50 cities across the UK, Wigan scored an amazing 71 points out of 100 – only 13 points off top spot and sitting 71 points above bottom-placed London, which scored 0 due to soaring rents and lack of opportunities in the capital.

The research highlighted Northern England as the UK’s primary location for Care Assistants who thrive within the sector.

Millennium Care has four homes based in Wigan: Lakeside Care Home, Langtree Care Home, Norley Hall Care Home and Worthington Lake Care Home. It is also home to the unique Standish Care Village.

For Care Assistants in Wigan, they see an average salary of £25,958 and due to the housing marketing keep 77% of their income after rent, a figure much stronger than those in the south of the country.

“The results haven’t surprised us, and we’re thrilled that the north of the country is producing great outcomes for our sectors. At Millennium Care, we want to give our staff the best possible opportunities and offer strong salaries, additional benefits, development and flexibility.”

Stacey Astin, Group Regional Manager at Millennium Care, said:

“I’ve been with the company for five years, and it’s been the best one I’ve worked for in this sector. The company empowers me and gives me the best tools for the job to ensure I can work to the best of my ability and ultimately support the residents, whom we all care deeply about.

“We’re like a family; the bonds we create mean that life at Millennium doesn’t feel like work. I look forward to seeing my colleagues, the residents, their families and all friends of the home.”

Kath, a Care Assistant within the Millennium Care Group, said:
