Who says you can’t create meaningful music in a care home?

2 minute read

When you think of a care home, what comes to mind? For some, it’s quiet corridors, hushed tones, and the soft hum of routine. But that’s only part of the story. Step inside a Millennium home and you’ll see that we embrace music, and you’ll find something much more than you expected!

Music has a unique power. It lifts spirits, sparks memories, and creates moments that words alone can’t. For residents living with dementia, a familiar song can unlock a world of recognition, bringing back names, faces, and experiences thought to be forgotten. For others, it’s the sheer joy of singing along to a favourite tune or swaying gently to a melody that makes the day brighter.

Care homes that weave music into everyday life are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s a therapy that our homes have been doing for some time. With connections to Music in Mind and an in-house Group Music Ambassador, residents have group and one-to-one sessions.

Alongside this, communal areas peacefully pump out playlists, live performances from local musicians are weekly occurrences, and instruments are strategically placed throughout our homes, all of which allow residents to bond with each other, families and staff.

It’s not just about entertainment, either. Research shows music reduces stress, eases anxiety, and can even help reduce reliance on medication. In other words, it’s not a “nice to have”, it’s a meaningful part of care.

Silence has its place. But too much silence can feel isolating. Music fills the air with warmth, energy, and joy. It reminds us that life in a care home isn’t about stopping; it’s about continuing and living well.

All the above form part of our residents’ care plans, with our Activity Coordinators and Group Music Ambassador leading the way, so much so that even residents with no music experience can create something meaningful in personalised sessions, using instruments they’ve never played before and unlocking areas of their brains that they may not have used before!
