Jean finds her feet

3 minute read

Jean O’Connor joined the Lakeside family in March 2023, immobile and unable to move unaided.

Since being at Lakeside, Jean has come on leaps and bounds, and everyone around her couldn’t be more pleased.

Sophie, a Community Physiotherapist, has been aiding Jean’s progression as well as supporting the educational development of two University of Bolton students, Michael, and Tamara. The pair study Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation.

This experience was part of the IPE (Interprofessional training), a study focussed on how students can work collaboratively with care homes to help residents achieve their goals.

Thanks to the commitment of Sophie, Michael and Tamara, Jean was able to walk the length of her bedroom using a gutter frame!

“It’s such a fantastic achievement to help Jean gain mobility whilst under our care. It’s opened many opportunities for her, she takes herself to church, goes shopping and has found a new lease of life.

“We’re extremely proud and excited to help mould students from various universities in the North West and welcome them into the future of care.”

Gail Howard, Home Manager at Lakeside

“I’m ever so grateful for all the hard work and effort I’ve received since coming to Lakeside. On the first week I arrived, they said they would get me on my feet, and I didn’t believe them.

“I used to need a lot of support and now I feel I’m becoming so much more independent. It’s exciting to see how far I can go, hopefully, I’ll be able to walk independently again."
