Male isolation in care homes (MIiCH) stems from a mix of imbalances within care settings, with 30% of residents and 21% of Carers being male, alongside social habits and the design of care environments.
Homes within the Millennium Care Group, and of course, the Standish Care Village, are forward-thinking, non-institutionalised, and have ambitions to help all residents age with vibrancy and tackling MIiCH is a big part of that. The three homes within the Standish Care Village, Lakeside, Langtree and Worthington Lake, all deliver their own antidotes to the well-researched and sector-wide problem.
The recently completed Langtree Care Home houses both a Cigar Lounge and a Fitness Suite – Boston Active; not just for the men, but both provide opportunities for stereotypically ‘male-oriented’ activities. The home’s first male Activity Coordinator, Chris, provides a balanced approach to activity programming, while the Standish Care Village’s PT, Freddy, delivers tailored sessions to individuals, helping them achieve their fitness goals.
Also supporting the Care Village is the Estates Manager, Dave, who has been key in transforming the site in recent months. He’s now putting time into the care homes, creating sessions specifically for the male residents with projects and trips on the horizon, such as crafting bird boxes for Spring and a trip to the Imperial War Museum.
Across the Village, Worthington Lake has its own Saloon Bar, perfect for games, chats and respite from the hustle and bustle of the care homes and if you follow any of the homes on Facebook, you will often see our men having a sit-down at the pub with friends they’ve made, and special trips to the football, car shows – we even saw Sean, resident at Worthington Lake, get back into scuba diving!
Millennium’s commitment to end MIiCH is real, and we look forward to helping out gentlemen live happy, healthy lives as they age with vibrancy across our five homes.
